Employment is one of the crucial matters in any country. In a nation, people contribute in various ways to increase its GDP. They contribute by working in IT sectors, schools, hospitals, restaurants or administrative bodies. Human resources are the wealthiest resources that can be utilised in any country.
As a result, millions of people are searching for jobs to sustain themselves and their living standards. Since the number of industries is increasing rapidly, several companies are hiring both full-time and part-time employees. They are implementing more employee-friendly strategies to increase their revenues. These job opportunities are extremely beneficial and convenient.
Now let us explore some of the advantages and disadvantages of working as a part-time employee:
|Free Time||Performance and working hours|
|An Opportunity for students, retired people and housewives||2. Commitment Issues|
|Reduces Absenteeism||3. Less Perks and Benefits|
|Cost-Effective||4. Payment Issues|
Advantages of Working as a Part-Time Employee:
- Free Time:
One of the most attractive benefits of working as a part-time employee is a part-time employee gets enough free time to focus on his or her other important activities. If a PhD student joins an academic institution as a part-time lecturer, he or she can earn a good deal of money and also can focus on his or her PhD thesis as well. If the working hours are flexible, a part-time employee can utilise the remaining portion of his day more productively.
- An Opportunity for students, retired people and housewives:
Students, people who have retired and housewives can think of starting a new career by working as part-time employees. A college-goer can work in a fast-food restaurant in the evening shifts so that he or she can attend their morning classes.
A person who has just retired, can work as a part-time employee in a small agency to get over his boring schedule. A housewife, who probably had to resign from her job can think of starting a new career again. A part-time job, hence, is more feasible for those people in a society who do not have the luxury to spend eight or nine hours in their offices.
- Reduces Absenteeism:
Since a part-time employee already works for fewer hours, their dedication and commitment are more noticeable. They generally do not remain absent on a regular basis unless their health conditions deteriorate or it is an emergency.
Also, they have pressure to complete their everyday tasks within a limited timespan, and that is the reason why they are obligated to work regularly to finish their daily assignments.
If a company offers adequate salary for the given working hours, then working as a part-time employee in that company is cost-effective. Also, many companies offer ‘work from home’ option and that is extremely convenient for those who have certain monetary problems or live in remote places. Daily commutation is extremely stressful, and so for those part-time employees who work from home, work life gets easier and more convenient.
Part-time employees are, in most cases, more dedicated because they never get bored. Extreme fatigue becomes a glaring problem when a full-time employee has to complete his shift by spending eight or nine hours in his office.
But this is not an issue that a part-time employee frequently experiences. That is exactly the reason why part-time employees are more productive and focused.
- Busy Periods:
Part-Time employees can fill up the busy periods which full-time employees are often unable to do. A full-time employee is often assigned to multiple projects and hence he or she cannot perform fluently. Then, the project-in-charge can reassign some of the tasks to a part-time employee to get his work done on time.
- Flexible Deadlines:
A part-time employee doesn’t experience a lot of pressure. Since his working hours are in most cases flexible, they can refix their deadlines as and when necessary.
Disadvantages of Working as a Part-Time Employee:
- Performance and Working Hours:
Since working hours are limited for a part-time employee, it may affect his or her performance if they remain absent or if they cannot focus on their work. It becomes increasingly stressful when the employee has to complete a task within a few hours that are allotted to him or her.
- Commitment Issues:
A part-time employee may work in a company to gain some experience or to utilise his or her time more productively. He or she may not have to run a family by working as a part-timer. Hence, commitment issues may arise and there have numerous cases where part-time employees have resigned from their jobs in a few months. This is a trend that can also be noticed in case of those part-timers who change the companies where they work too frequently.
- Less Perks and Benefits:
It’s an obvious fact that part-time employees enjoy less perks and benefits in comparison to the full-time employees. They spend less hours, they involve themselves in fewer projects and as a result, they receive less perks and benefits from their organisations.
- Payment Issues:
In many companies, part-time employees are either poorly paid or are not paid timely. In several startup companies, their names are not even registered and hence certain administrative loopholes are generated in their payment processes. If they do not receive their payments on time and if they seek an answer from their higher authorities, in several cases, the authorities refuse to fix the bug.
Often a part-time employee fails to balance his work life and his personal life successfully. If a student works at a restaurant as a part-time employee every day, his academic performance may deteriorate. Unless you are an efficient multitasker, you can never become a successful part-time employee.
Despite these minor disadvantages, it is extremely convenient for many people to work as part-timers in big companies or agencies. As long as they work in a company, they gather a lot of experience and learn a lot from their seniors. This experience remains valuable and enriches their CVs later.
